A manual for
the first miles.

The Trail Manual helps new backpackers make practical decisions about planning, equipment, and trail skills. Our focus is a manageable first overnight, with room to learn.

How we build trust

We research primary sources, link them beside factual claims, and record when they were checked. Manufacturer specifications are identified by model and variant. Conflicts are disclosed, and incomplete products stay out of the public catalog.

Our guides include editorial exercises and suggestions; these are labeled separately from sourced facts. We do not claim personal testing, professional qualifications, or firsthand trail experience that we cannot substantiate.

How to use this site

Start with the field guides, make your own route plan, and adapt the packing list to local rules and conditions. A checklist cannot determine whether a trip is safe. Consult the land manager and learn to use the equipment you carry.

Corrections

Source dates appear on guides and product listings. If a specification conflicts with your exact product, follow its current manual and confirm it with the manufacturer. A public corrections email address is not currently available.
